INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Sandi Glas of Glas Houses
Sandi Glas has been a participant at the Home & Garden Expo for several years now. She shares with us why she chose to sponsor this year’s Expo.
Q: Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo and for your support of Relay For Life! Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?
A: On a personal level, there is the connection to Relay For Life that I have as someone who has lost my father to cancer and as a survivor myself. As a builder, the Home & Garden Expo is THE event of the year and an opportunity to have my work seen by more people than would just stumble across my store or my MP listings.
Q: Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life? Have you been to a real world Relay?
A: This is my 7th year at the Expo, having taken part every year since 2011! Yes, I have taken part in real world, local Relay events dating back to when I was much younger than I am now.
Q: Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo this year. Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release at the Expo?
A: I’m bringing two new house designs to Expo this year. One is a prairie style that, at 64 meters long, is the largest house I’ve ever built. The other is, of course, a mid-century modern ranch because, well…MCM rocks. Those are two that I know for sure. Anything else I bring I want to be a surprise to myself.
Q: When did you first arrive in SL and what brought you to Second Life?
A: I recently celebrated my 10th rezz day! Initially, I came because I had read the notorious BusinessWeek article about Second Life and, being in college at the time, thought I might be able to get a paper out of the idea of SL’s virtual economy. I stayed for the delicious guacamole.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building and creating awesome products? Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?
A: Besides building, I own a small, six region estate that keeps me quite busy. I find that the satisfaction I get from meeting new tenants and providing them a place to build their dream home far outweighs the nagging fear that each month might bring financial ruin. 🙂 I do most of the things everyone else does in SL; I shop, I go to concerts, I shop, I go to dance clubs, I shop, I explore the amazing sims created by people with far more talent than I, I shop, I take part in some decidedly adult activities, and I shop.
Q: Tell us about more about your SL business?
A: Glas Houses was established originally for the sole purpose of allowing me to compete as a pro in the build competitions put on by the Frank Lloyd Wright Virtual Museum. Very much to my surprise, people actually liked and purchased my homes. FLWVM is, sadly, long gone, but I continue to build houses and people continue to surprise me by purchasing them. I have since branched off into doing custom designs, which I find delightful because I get to balance the clients ideas of what they want with the urgings of the ghost of Frank Lloyd, who seems to think I should build what I want and the client should shut up. Frank said that, not me.
Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new Sansar and will you also set up shop there? Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?
A: I’m a dinosaur who still prefers to build inworld with prims. Okay, I have failed miserably when it comes to learning how to use 3D programs. Also, I have a Mac, so the new gen platform isn’t interested in me.
Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?
A: I’m a lawyer, but not the kind you call if you have a DUI or murdered someone or your neck hurts because someone ran into you. I’m the kind you call if you want to merge your company with another one, or your company might have accidentally covered up disposing of nuclear waste by pumping it into the lake a nearby town gets its drinking water from. I really don’t talk to my family about second life ever since my college roommates took to calling it “Sandi’s naked slavegirl game”.
Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or someone who has really inspired your business?
A: I’d like to thank all my friends who have been patient with me and encouraged my building over the years, with special mention to Mechelle Oceanlane, Wendy Starfall, Elizzabeth Short, and Claire Sykes for their encouragement, and in the case of Mechelle and Wendy, their patience in teaching me basic building way back when. I want to remember Frey Bravin and Rosalie Oldrich, both of the FLWVM and both of whom are no longer with us. And, lastly, I want to mention Cain Maven, who is a way better builder than I’ll ever be and still treats me like an equal anyway.
Take a look at the list of fantastic builders and landscapers who have signed up to be part of this year’s Home & Garden Expo and Breedables Fair. It’s shaping up to be an amazing event, once again, and it’s in support of Relay For Life of Second Life. TWO spaces left for Expo and a few more than that for the Breedables area! Registrations close May 5th! Head to this link for more info!
