ROAWANWOOD ~ SEARLAIT NITSCHKE

INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Searlait Nitschke of Roawanwood

Q:  Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo and for your support of Relay For Life!  Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?

A:  I like to sponsor, to give an extra bit to the community…. For RFL. I have worked with it so often in real life and in SL so every little bit that I can do I try to.

Q:  Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life?  Have you been to a real world Relay?

A: Yes and yes. In Second Life I am one of the world builders for Fantasy Faire creating worlds on five different occasions for them. I’ve done displays for the RFL track a few times and have done some various events for different teams over the years. I try to get involved when I can.

In real life I’ve been a part of different teams and participated.

Q:  Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo this year.  Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release at the Expo?

A: I brought in some things, grasses, trees, and some little memorial boats.

Q:  When did you first arrive in Second Life and what brought you to Second Life?

A: Sure make me feel old. I came into SL at the end of June 2006.  A friend of mine on a forum I used to belong to started a thread talking about this great place that was in 3D where she flew around naked touring from sim to sim. Was having great fun doing it and wanted to share the link. She was quite impressed you could actually fly. That’s what brought me to Second Life, LOL

Q:  Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building and creating awesome products?  Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?

A: I role play when I can. I like to get into stories, and in depth characters. I have a lot of fun doing that. I love to write and that feeds into it. I can be quite the babbling para-rp’er. But often I am creating. I create the things I’d like to see or the things that people mention they’d like to see in their role play mostly. Ways to enhance a scene or living space. Most of my things have role play scenarios in mind. I’ve learned a lot. Modeling and 3d especially since mesh I felt I had to really learn to do it for myself. I’ve also learned that burn out is real. lol

Q:  Tell us about more about your SL business?

A:  Well it’s a little bit of this and that. It started out as a challenge to see how far I could go, plus I couldn’t ever find what I really wanted so this was my way of throwing it out there. I wanted to do it all. My business is really a personal project where I like to welcome people as family though I’ve gotten a lot quieter than I used to be.

Mostly I stick to period pieces, medieval, fantasy, and some Gorean. I don’t do a lot of contemporary building, and even when I try it ends up looking rustic or something.

Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new generation platform and will you also set up shop there?  Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?

A:  I don’t know. I haven’t decided.  Long term is relative isn’t it? My business is over 10 years old now…. Long term.  To try to remain a bit unique and still have fun doing it.

Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of  SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?

A: Technically what I do here is my source of income, and yes they do.

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or  someone who has really inspired your business?

A: Not at the moment, took me so long to find this (offlines and all things got eaten so had to go back to find) that I’m feeling bad that I didn’t get it done sooner! Lol

SURGE FULL PERMED MESH ~ TAO DREAMSCAPE

INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Tao Dreamscape of Surge Full Permed Mesh

Q: Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo and for your support of Relay For Life!  Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?

A:  Hello! I have not been very active in Second Life for the past couple of years due to real life demands. I recently decided to get back to working full time in Second Life, and I thought that the expo would be a great opportunity for me to get back into the flow of things, and a great opportunity for me to do my part to help out with a great charity.

Q:  Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life?  Have you been to a real world Relay?

A: I have been involved with several  previous events in Second life for relay for life, I have however not had the chance to participate in any real life events.

Q:  Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo this year.  Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release at the Expo?

A: The biggest thing that I have worked on for the Expo this year is the building which houses the rest of my items at the Expo. It is an old industrial style building. I had a vision of a building that could be used as a commercial space, and could be converted into an industrial loft home, or pretty much anything someone might use such a building for, including its original industrial use. I had originally planned on displaying it as a home, complete with furniture and decor, appliances etc, but since I only recently quit my rl job, I simply did not have the time to complete it as originally envisioned. I created a chandelier for this building, and this is the item I chose to use for the relay. I do plan to release more items exclusively for the Expo that are in line with my original concept.

Q:  When did you first arrive in Second Life and what brought you to Second Life?

A: I first arrived in Second Life back in 2007. I had a friend in rl who turned me on to it.

Q:  Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building and creating awesome products?  Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?

A: In the early day of my time here, I spent a lot of time exploring different social environments, bars, clubs and such. I was especially drawn to spiritually themed hangouts. Nowadays when I’m not working, I’m usually shopping.

Q:  Tell us about more about your SL business?

A: Other than the fact that it is work for me, and a source of income, it is what I am most passionate about, more than anything else I have tried, and I have tried many many things in my life. This is the one thing that makes me happy, and satisfies my need for creative expression and personal freedom.

Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new generation platform and will you also set up shop there?  Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?

A:  I am somewhat looking forward to the new generation platform, aside from the fact that I will need to do some upgrades that will set me back a few bucks just to run the platform. I am however excited that Second Life is looking into the future. I feel that in order for Second Life to survive in the long term it will be necessary to evolve in order to take advantage of new technologies and appeal to a younger generation.

Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of  SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?

A: I will let you in on a huge aspect of my Real Life. This is something that has had a lot to do with my absence in sl for the last couple years, due to major upheaval that it has caused. It was a little over two years ago, I came out to my friends and family as transgender. I have had some really difficult times transitioning, but today I feel that I am settling into my new life, and have never been happier. My experience has given me a new lease on life. I have learned to love and accept myself, and in turn I have lots love to give to others. My family does fully support me, and my Second Life aspirations. I am very blessed to have such wonderful people in my life.

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or  someone who has really inspired your business?

A: I have a deep admiration for my colleagues who create such beautiful things in Second Life. Their creativity is inspiring to me,and alway pushes me to do better.

GALLAND HOMES ~ ROBERT GALLAND

INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Robert Galland of Galland Homes

Q:  Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo and for your support of Relay For Life!  Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?

A:  I’ve participated in one form or another in the Home and Garden Expo almost every year since its inception.  It’s an event I circle on my calendar and I have helped sponsor before. Most people have been touched by cancer in some form and its a disease we need to conquer.

Q:  Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life?  Have you been to a real world Relay?

A: I believe so, but because I work in the Home and Garden industry, this one sticks out to me most.

Q:  Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo this year.  Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release at the Expo?

A: You will have to see!  🙂 People can follow my teasers and releases at either https://www.facebook.com/GallandHomes/  or

https://www.flickr.com/photos/gallandhomes/

Q:  When did you first arrive in Second Life and what brought you to Second Life?

A: I signed up on October 18, 2006 in response to a Yahoo news story that ran that day.  I have heard that date had the highest sign-ups for SL ever, but do not know for sure.  I read about the working economy in the game environment and was fascinated I was going to flip land for fun and that evolved quickly into becoming a builder.  I was amazed how vast the world seemed.

Q:  Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building and creating awesome products?  Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?

A:  Like many creators, a majority of my time over the last eleven years has been spent on a building platform.  Like most people, I socialized more at the beginning and explored. I flew in SL a bit. I did have a period where I co-owned a roleplay venue and found that I enjoyed that hobby in SL.  As the years have passed, though, I have returned to my primary love and that is creating architecture.

Q:  Tell us about more about your SL business?

A:  I started Galland Homes as a venture in late 2006 and opened for business on February 3, 2007.  I have always tried to use an interest I had as a child in forming spaces and creating architecture people will enjoy.  I was the kid in that had the two-story clubhouse in the woods with a bridge to the treehouse in the apple tree. I’m amazed none of us were killed.  🙂 In fact, as a child I wanted to be an architect, but ultimately went down a different RL career path.

My focus in the earlier years was in creating large and luxurious houses with water effects that were most at home in canal/country club like atmospheres.  I had a lot of early Tuscan and Hawaiian renaissance homes for example. I think with all artistic forms, what happens in RL has affected what art has been presented in SL.  After the world’s financial troubles in late ‘08 and ‘09, you saw a shift towards people wanting more modest and cozy offerings and people were spending less on virtual land.  I think that things are slowly swinging back, but a lot of my offerings now are more traditional craftsman family homes or southeast Atlantic beach style homes you would find in the Carolinas, Georgia, etc.  I have felt a real pull to return to my roots and am excited to start developing some Tuscan and Mediterranean homes soon.

I participate in a modest number of events, but will be trying to find a balance this year with creating intermittently for events, but offering more mainstore shopping experiences.  I think that customers still like the chance to come and tour a house in a setting that I can present at the Galland Homes in world store. I am enjoying creating and hope that in 11 years, I will still be going and be able to reflect on 22 years of creating houses in Second Life.

Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new generation platform and will you also set up shop there?  Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?

A:  I have had an account in Sansar since being invited.  I have not done a great deal there or offered builds for sale yet.  I will monitor the world and make offerings when I think the time is right.  It really is a different world than SL and not meant to cater to the same person or purpose.  I believe that for the time being, the financial incentive exists to focus solely on SL.

Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of  SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?

A:  I am fairly open about my real life to those who know me.  I have a professional career and my own business in the real world too.  My experience in SL made that possible as I did not have to rely on working for others to make ends meet as I transitioned into having my own rl business.  My family has known about my business in SL since day one and, while they did not understand it at first, has always been supportive. I am a father of three, two of whom are under four, so I balance a lot and sometimes the SL work has to take a back seat, of course.

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or  someone who has really inspired your business?

A: There are a lot of people who have helped along the

way.  Too many to mention and I would not want someone to feel left out.  My earliest friends, Montana Laurasia, Zane Kleene and Cesta Bohemia, none of whom have been active for some time, were huge supporters of me early on.  Some may remember JJ Lanes, the Caribbean furniture maker. Rory and Kris also were once valued partners in crime, but have since long gone as well. I now enjoy camaraderie with so many talented creators in and out of home and garden.

CHAMPION HORSES ~ NICOLYTI

INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Nicolyti of Champion Horses

Q: Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo and for your support of Relay For Life! Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?

A: We always try to! It is such a wonderful charity and much needed in this world.

Q: Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life? Have you been to a real world Relay?

A: We have done all the winter breedable fairs as well. No, unfortunately I’ve never had the chance….yet

Q: Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo this year. Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release at the Expo?

A: For this Expo, we created a stunning new coat, the Silver Buckskin, available in many different breed packs, to be sold exclusively here at the event. We also created a Champion Warrior, a warpaint Thoroughbred, OOAK (one-of-a-kind), to ‘champion’ the fight against cancer.

Q: When did you first arrive in Second Life and what brought you to Second Life?

A: I started Second Life over four years ago, and like many, followed a friend from another game I played. You know, at first, I wasn’t sure it was for me, but I am a people-person, and it was a great fit for me.

Q: Tell us about more about your SL business?

A: I am actually the General Manager of Champion Horses, having been the personal, real-life assistant to the owner, Ken Edge. He has left them in my hands to grow and expand and make people aware of the great race horses they are. Their racing mechanics and fluidity is, I think, the closest Second Life came come to real racing. They are challenging and take real skill. They are also just fun to breed. We have many that just enjoy that aspect.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building an amazing business? Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?

A: You know, I said earlier that I am a ‘people person’.. .that wasn’t always the truth. I was rather closed off in many ways. Second Life has changed me, for the better. In the beginning of my SL journey I explored and experimented, like most, but that random wandering isn’t really for me. I like to have purpose, meaning, and I love to help people. I actually enjoy keeping my ‘campers’ happy, and I love creating all the new horse coats and manes and tails, and learning, in baby steps, the scripting aspect too.

Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new generation platform and will you also set up a community there? Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?

A: I have mixed feelings on that. I believe the owner of Champion Horses would like to expand to that platform as well, but I will remain here and continue the good fight 🙂

Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?

A: I am happily married, with two grown boys. My mother doesn’t really understand Second Life, lol, but they all support me in my endeavors in it, and actually think ‘its cool’. I work for the same man, the owner of the horses, in real-life also, managing his many servers and his radio company and just about anything and everything he throws at me….it can be a lot!

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or someone who has really inspired your business?

A: Not really, and the horses are their own inspiration. Having had horses in real-life, it was a great fit for me. I will say, I recently lost a very dear friend, in real life and SL, and she was involved in these Champion Horses in a big way, our own little personal ‘champion’. She has been the glue that held this wonderful equine community together, and she continues to do so. She left big shoes to fill and will forever be a part of us. (Blessings to her always, Cheryl Baskein.)

BIOBREEDS ~ OZZIE DRUCKER

INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPONSOR: Ozzie Drucker of BioBreeds

Q:  Hello! Thank you so much for sponsoring the Home & Garden Expo/Breedables Fair and for your support of Relay For Life!  Is there a particular reason you chose to sponsor this year?

A:  We have participated in past years and this year is no exception.  We always look for ways to do our part for RFL. 🙂

Q:  Have you been involved in other events with Relay For Life of Second Life?  Have you been to a real world Relay?

A: For years we participated in the Bid Me Bald promotion that the Relay Rockers do every year. And that has been incredibly successful thanks to Trader1 Whiplash. The BioBreeds group made us number one for all those years till the Lindens teamed up on us last year!

Q:  Tell us what you’re bringing to The Expo/Breedables Fair this year.  Especially about the items you created for Relay. Any other exclusive items you’re planning to release?

A: We created 4 “Epics” for this.  A male and female Bunny and a male and female Border Collie. If you care to see them they are here:  Home Expo 6 (227,5,23)

Q:  When did you first arrive in Second Life and what brought you to Second Life?

A: I first came to SL in 2005 and left soon after because my computer was just not ready to handle it.  I returned in 2008 after hearing Ray Kurzweil talk about virtual reality. I simply planned to immerse myself in SL. And I did.

Q:  Tell us about more about your SL business?

A: Originally I developed a fairly large property company but soon became interested in breedables and opened the first breedable market in SL (The Farm) and then partnered with Bytecode Republic who codes and Charity Goldfarb, who textures, and launched BioBreeds. We created breedable dogs.  We have expanded and now create dogs, horses, Wild Ones, Farmimals and just recently we released Bunnies! 🙂 We have a great group and a staff that is completely focused on helping them in any way possible.

Q:  Can you tell us a bit about how you’ve spent your Second Life, besides building an amazing business?  Hobbies, interests.. things you’ve learned along the way ?

A: I think I have covered most of that.  But i think my biggest takeaway from my time in Second Life is learning that no matter where people are from, no matter what their background, essentially we are all the same, with the same problems, opportunities, needs and wants.

Q: Are you looking forward to Second Life’s new Sansar and will you also set up a community there?  Do you have long-term goals for your business in Second Life, too?

A:  I joined Sansar ofc.  We have looked at it as a future option.  But right now we are committed to maintaining and and continuing to build our presence in SL.

Q: Do you want to share a look at your life outside of  SL with us? What do you or did you do for a living? Does your family support your SL aspirations?

A: I have owned several businesses in RL which has helped me tremendously in launching BioBreeds in SL. My total time now is devoted to BioBreeds.

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about you, or a special mentor, friends or  someone who has really inspired your business?

A: Just like anyone else, I was greatly helped by a number of people when first in SL.  From them I learned the value of helping new people adjust to SL. I continue to do that. Special thanks would have to go to Charity Goldfarb who I helped originally but who quickly became my mentor! Lol  And as far as breedables go, I would thank everyone who has developed those and helped build the breedable community.

Beat the Clock game show wrapped up last night and what fun it was!  The finalists were Adam and Ari Spark, PrettyKitty Gumbo, Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas.  It was a close race and the girls gave those guys a run for the money!  Beat the Clock was an obstacle course and contestants paid 300L each to the Expo RFL kiosk, to enter.  That entry fee gave them three attempts to beat the clock.  Two of their ending times were thrown out and their best time saved.  The course required skills in golf, basketball throw, hopscotch, zip lining, steering a hamster wheel and driving a tiny car to the finish line.  So much fun to watch!  The winners, in first is Nuala Maracas, second place went to Trader Whiplash and third place is PrettyKitty Gumbo!  Prizes included a 2500L donation to an RFL kiosk of the winner’s choice.  That donation went to The Home and Garden Expo!  Thank you, Nuala!

Family Feud gets underway on Saturday, June 2nd at 9am SLT.  Four teams will compete in a tournament that will end with one winning team!  The family feud set is located on the Expo Center region.  Come out and cheer on the teams!

DJ Gem Sunkiller takes the Expo stream today at 5pm.  Gem is a longtime Relay For Life volunteer and well loved SL DJ who can also be heard on T1 Radio.  Gem will take us through the evening with fun music and dance, at the Center Stage.. so hopefully we’ll see you there!
